The team at M&S would like to wish all of our Muslim friends, staff and clients a Ramadan Mubarak (blessed Ramadan) which is expected to commence on the evening of Friday the 28th of February and conclude on Sunday the 30th of March.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is a period of observation, where Muslims all around the world partake in fasting for the whole month. The fasting period lasts from dawn until sunset and those taking part must refrain from eating, smoking and drinking (yes, even water!) during the daytime hours. It is a fundamental aspect of Islam, being one of the Five Pillars, and is intended to strengthen our relationship with Allah (God) and help us understand the suffering and hardship that the less fortunate go through on a daily basis.

As well as fasting, Muslims are expected to carry out as many good deeds as possible in order to reap the rewards of the Holy Month. This includes caring for those in need, engaging in acts of charity, supporting and giving back to your community and refraining from any negative behaviour such as swearing and back-biting. Engaging in these acts help people experience individual growth that they can then demonstrate and commit to for the rest of their lives.

Ramadan will conclude on Sunday the 30th of March (exact dates dependent on the sighting of the moon) which will then be followed by Eid al-Fitr. This is a celebration that signifies the end of the Holy Month. The day is defined by feasting throughout the day (deservedly so), exchanging gifts and spending time with family and friends.

We all hope this Ramadan brings tremendous blessings and joy to you and your loved ones. Enjoy!
