This month, HMRC has launched a new online service that allows taxpayers to claim tax relief on work-related expenses without having to call HMRC or complete a self-assessment tax return for this one purpose.
The service can be accessed here and is accessed through taxpayer’s individual government gateway accounts (which can be set up as part of the claim process, if you do not already have one). Taxpayers will need to make the claim themselves, as the service is not available for agents.
For most employees working from home, the simplest and most common cost that can be claimed is the ‘Use of Home Allowance’. This allowance is currently £6 per week (it was previously £4 up to 5 April 2020) and is to cover general household costs that have been incurred/increased as a result of home working. More details on this, and areas to watch out for when claiming home working expenses can be found in our article from July this year
If there are any specific expenses you have incurred whilst working from home that you would like to know if you can claim for, please get in touch and we would be happy to assist.
