Taxation

At M&S we are proud of the range of tax services that we provide to our clients. We take a personal interest in ensuring that we are aware of changes to legislation, proactively notifying clients of any changes affecting them.

We aim to understand our clients objectives and work with them to provide the services that suit their requirements. For some clients this may simply involve the preparation of an annual tax return. For others, we become actively involved in ensuring that they have the right information to enable them to make decisions.

Our services include the following:

We take a personal interest in changes to legislation, proactively notifying clients of any changes affecting them.

We aim to understand our client’s objectives and work with them to provide the services that suit their requirements. For some clients this may simply involve the preparation of an annual tax return. For others, advisory work is crucial to planning future transactions and make short term or longer term plans.

We provide an efficient and reliable tax return preparation service, covering the preparation of personal, partnership, corporate and trust tax returns.  We use our knowledge of our clients to tailor our annual data collection process specifically based on the client.  We endeavour to provide clients with early notification of any payments due and will deal with all routine HMRC correspondence for clients, checking the accuracy of statements and refunds.

Our approach to tax planning is to first work with the client to ensure that we fully understand their personal objectives.

We treat our clients as individuals and, whilst making them aware of all possible options, would only recommend ones suited to their specific requirements.

We are happy to offer these solutions alongside our Tax Return Preparation service or, alternatively, work alongside other advisers, providing adhoc planning advice.  This often covers areas in dealing with pensions, inheritance tax, capital gains tax, as well as looking at ways to reduce annual income tax and corporation tax bills.

Any form of HMRC enquiry is usually unwelcome and intrusive.  Innocent taxpayers can find themselves under suspicion and detailed scrutiny from HMRC officers.

We have a vast amount of experience in handling HMRC enquiries at all levels and a great track record in negotiating successful outcomes with HMRC.  Enquiries and settlements handled include those conducted by HMRC’s Special Civil Investigations Unit, Employer Compliance and investigations into business accounts and personal returns.

Our excellent reputation is emphasised by the regular referrals from other accountancy firms who do not have the experience or capability to handle such enquiries.  We cannot guarantee that there will never be any extra tax payable but you can be assured that any enquiry will be completed in a thoroughly professional manner and with the best interest of the taxpayer paramount.

We offer fee protection insurance to clients who can then have us carry out a robust defence of their position with HMRC without having to worry about the professional costs.

Due to various social and economic factors, moving to a new country continues to be a growing trend.  Our specialist expatriate services address the tax concerns that many people have when moving to a new location either for business or personal reasons.

We provide advice to both inbound and outbound expatriates and our clients include high net worth individuals, senior executives and multinational companies.

We provide Tax Return Preparation services to employees being assigned to and from the UK.  Our experience in the application of double tax treaties enables us to advise on the interaction of UK and overseas taxes, with a view to minimising our clients overall tax exposure.

The combination of our Employment Tax and Incentives experience and our expatriate knowledge is invaluable in ensuring that all UK tax obligations are satisfied on an efficient and timely basis.

We also provide US Tax Return Preparation services, as well as offering US Tax Planning.

Our team is experienced in advising on all aspects of employer tax compliance, whether in conjunction with our Payroll service or as a stand alone advisory service.

We advise clients on the PAYE requirements of providing non cash and share related benefits, managing the reporting and payment of PAYE and National Insurance Contributions.  We also provide advice to firms exploring ways to remunerate employees in ways other than standard salary and cash bonuses.

We have a vast amount of experience in representing clients and negotiating settlements arising from HMRC Enquiries and employer compliance reviews.

Expatriate employees and business visitors from overseas countries is an area commonly audited by HMRC given that compliance in this area can be poor and will often result in increased revenues for HMRC.  The combination of our employment tax expertise with our specialist expatriate knowledge is invaluable in ensuring that an employer is fully compliant, whilst taking advantage of all available reliefs and exemptions.

Our services include:

  • Advising on tax efficient remuneration strategies
  • Dealing with employer compliance reviews
  • Advising on matters specific to expatriate employees
  • Set up and maintenance of Employee Share Schemes
