Countdown To Being A Scottish Taxpayer

There are now less than 3 months until most Scots (and many other nationalities too) start paying income tax under a different set of rules to the rest of the UK.  From 6 April 2016, Scottish taxpayers will effectively pay income tax to the Scottish Government who will have responsibility for both collecting and spending the funds received, (albeit collection will be sub-contracted for a fee to HMRC).

All Change At The Top

No tears are being shed at M&S over Ms Homer’s imminent departure.  Following on from her predecessor Dave Hartnett who wasn’t exactly renowned for overseeing a service of high quality, Lin Homer has, despite the propaganda suggesting otherwise, presided over a continued downward spiral in HMRC’s service standards to taxpayers and an erosion of taxpayer’s rights. She is after all the Chief Executive who thought it perfectly ok for HMRC to have access to raid a taxpayer’s personal bank account for alleged liabilities without the knowledge of the taxpayer.  The Guardian, it seems, shares similar views, expressed in their recent article, “Lin Homer, Dame Disaster, puts in a classic display before MPs.”

Boldly Into The Digital Age

The end of the annual tax return is nigh or at least so we are led to believe with more details emerging in the Autumn statement on what this will mean for taxpayers.  Once HMRC expanded on their plans that potentially annual returns would be replaced by some form of interaction with HMRC on a quarterly basis it is fair to say all hell broke loose.  Such was the controversy about the plan that it led to an irate businessman called Paul Johnson to start an online petition objecting to the proposals and due to the success of the petition this matter will now be debated in parliament on 25 January.

Fourplay – just how many tax returns do the government want from SMEs?

Ignorance is no excuse (says the IRS) … make sure you’re not caught out!

Many US Citizens and Green Card holders living outside the US are not aware they have to file annual US tax returns as well as reports of foreign bank accounts, to say nothing of other information forms such as reporting certain gifts from foreign sources or interests in foreign companies.
